Formability analysis of PMMA-Ti grid sandwich

PMMA has great biomedical properties but lacks mechanical properties needed for hard-tissue implant applications. This gap can be fulfilled by preparing composites using Ti as a reinforcement material, as they have excellent mechanical properties and are also biocompatible. This idea has been implemented in preparing PMMA-Ti sandwiches where Ti grid and PMMA are used as starting materials. In these sandwiches, the interdiffusion of PMMA through the holes in Ti grid provides the necessary adhesion strength.

A good adhesion and formability of these sandwiches is an important part as these sandwiches are needed to be custom shaped as patients’ requirements in the future. Thus, in this study the adhesion and formability behaviour of the PMMA-Ti grid sandwich will be investigated.

Work package include:

  • Preparation of sandwich using hot-pressing process
  • Adhesion strength analysis using pull-off tests
  • Formability analysis using bending and deep drawing tests

You should have:

  • Basic knowledge of materials science
  • Basic understanding of mechanical testing of materials
  • High motivation to learn multidisciplinary field
